As a fellow layman, I think so, yes. They should basically cripple the Russian economy.

Kind of like the economic nuclear button has been pressed. Intel saying that Russia has prepared for this though, so hard to say how bad it will be. Also will probably affect the European energy market badly, hence why they probably stalled on pushing the button immediately.

At this point one has to ask what Putin's end game is here. Even if he were to add Ukraine to Russia (unlikely given the insurgency that is going to happen), he has been castrated by sanctions back home to where Russia will be sent back to the dark ages. There's literally nothing he can do to change this, since even if he were to abruptly retreat tomorrow, the sanctions would remain in place and continue aggressively eroding Russia from within.

What has happened today (summary)

Today is the fourth day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

It has been another fast-paced day of developments, as Ukrainian and Russian delegations prepare to meet on the border of Belarus.

Here's a run-down:
  • Fighting is ongoing in Ukraine's second city Kharkiv. Kyiv claims it is still in control of the area, but street fighting has erupted and people have been told to remain at home;
  • Russian troops have yet to enter the Ukrainian capital. The mayor of Kyiv said earlier this afternoon that soldiers are around 20km (12 miles) away from the city;
  • Vladimir Putin has ordered that Russia's nuclear deterrent forces are put on high alert. The president said aggressive statements by NATO leaders and economic sanctions against Moscow were behind the decision;
  • Ukrainian and Russian delegations have agreed to meet on the Belarusian border, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy;
  • Kyiv says around 4,300 Russian troops have been "killed or injured" in clashes in Ukraine - with "hundreds" more taken prisoner;
  • The United Nations says at least 368,000 refugees have now fled Ukraine.

From the BBC

During his evening programme tonight, Russian state TV presenter Dmitry Kiselyov delivered a monologue in which he posed the question: "why do we need a world if Russia's not in it?"

He was considering President Putin's announcement today that he is putting Russia's nuclear forces on high alert.

"In total our submarines are capable of launching over 500 nuclear warheads, which guarantees the destruction of the US and all Nato countries to boot," he said on his Vesti Nedeli show.

"That's according to the principle 'why do we need a world if Russia's not in it?'

"Russia's nuclear weapons are also delivered by the fastest strategic bombers in the world," he said, adding that "we won't even talk about our Strategic Rocket Forces".

"In total, Russia's nuclear capability is the most powerful in the world," he said.

"Now Russia's entire nuclear triad has been placed on special alert. Putin warned them. Don't try to frighten Russia."

I know it seems laughable to some, but this is genuinely one of my major concerns. Not necessarily resulting in nuclear obliteration of the world, but this attitude, in general, resulting in escalation upon escalation. In other words, the hit to the ego of defeat is more painful to bear for someone like Putin than the cost to humanity of doing something drastic.

Even in Russia, there must be a way to prevent him from just doing it though.
