Putin is basically a one-trick pony, he's like a poker player who aggressively bluffs and his opposition knows it's likely a bluff but doesn't want to take the risk themselves. NATO until now has basically not done anything to curb his aggression but that changed with the reaction to this invasion. NATO adapted their approach but Putin hasn't, he's not some great strategist (in fact it looks like he's terrible judging by reports he was directly working with the military) this is all he has, escalation after escalation until he wins or loses. He will lose if the West keeps backing Ukraine.
Just like most dictators, his years of power have made him narcissistic and he's surrounded himself with yes men.

At least the weather in the relevant parts of Ukraine continues to look good for next couple of weeks. I saw a lot of sodden, muddy pictures and was getting worried that the climate may slow them down, but it looks like they won't be deluged with rain and mud yet.

How long have they got before it becomes really difficult over winter and decisions will have to be made about whether to hold for a spring offensive? You'd think Ukraine and allies will make better use of a rest period than Russia would.

Ukraine has targeted the bridge in Crimea.

I never thought they could get near that bridge. Hopefully those damaged fuel tankers act as a railblock that can't be moved.

The impact of the attack on the Crimean bridge is "massive" a Ukrainian MP has said.

Kira Rudik defended the destruction of the bridge, as she said: "Crimea is Ukraine and always was Ukraine. And the bridge was not even supposed to be there."

"It's a huge hit on Russian reputation," Ms Rudik told Sky News, adding that it will be difficult for "Russian propaganda" to explain the attack in a favourable light.

She continued to say "everyone should be very concerned" adding "Nuclear war is as close as ever before" when asked about the situation in Zaporizhzhia.

The international atomic energy agency previously the city's nuclear power plant has lost its last remaining external power source following further shelling.

"The nuclear plant still remains a key threat to the whole of Europe in terms of their nuclear security," she said.

Ms Rudik said it is "highly possible" Russia will launch a nuclear attack.

"We do believe the threat is real, and it's very high."

Hope I'm wrong but I suspect the retaliation is going to be destruction of a lot of Ukraine's remaining strategic bridges which have been largely left alone in recent weeks... Leading to difficulties in the planned winter humanitarian relief

Hope I'm proved wrong on this one

Certainly creeping towards the potential for Putin to use a nuclear weapon. Probably a way off but I don't see anybody who has a solution at the moment that avoids it. There's seemingly isn't any basis for a peaceful resolution here.

Looks like Russia's new aim is just to destroy Zaporizhzhia, a city whose oblast they claim, missile by missile.

Belarus is set to join the fray.
Yes, looks very much like it.

Very difficult times for them for the next 50 years. Russia is the richest country in the world when it comes to natural resources. It has enough resources to build back its economy if sanctions are lifted in the future. Belarus will suffer so much more for way longer. Hopefully, Lukashenko is overthrown once Putin is gone.
