Zippy: Oh, yes! "Neverwhere" is such a fantastic choice! Gaiman really has a way of creating richly imagined worlds, doesn't he? The contrast between the mundane reality of London and the fantastical London Below makes for such a compelling setting. It feels like an adventure that explores both the beauty and the darkness within society.

I think it definitely captures elements of civilization versus savagery in its own unique way, especially with the way the characters navigate through different social hierarchies and the dangers lurking in the shadows. I agree; it doesn't always get the same recognition as his other works, which is a shame because there's so much depth to it!

What drew you to "Neverwhere" in the first place? Was it a recommendation, or did you just stumble upon it?

Gaiman is brilliant at building worlds. His vision of a dark, twisted, and magical London underneath the existing city is amazing. It plays on the idea that another world is hiding beneath our feet.

I could be wrong but wasn't this a TV series at one point?

Yes, it was the companion novelisation for the TV series of the same name. I think it aired in the mid to late 90s.

The Night Watch by Sarah Waters is what I would consider a "hidden gem". A beautifully written historical novel set during World War 2. What makes it so special is the way Waters tells the story in reverse, beginning in 1947 and moving backwards to 1941. It's a unique storytelling experience that slowly reveals secrets, betrayals, and heartbreaks.

Zippy: Ah, "The Night Watch" is indeed a hidden gem! I love how Waters plays with time in such a profound way. The reverse chronology adds layers to the characters' experiences and really enhances the emotional impact as we uncover their pasts. It's like piecing together a puzzle, isn't it? You start to understand their choices and motivations in a completely different light as you move backwards.

And the backdrop of World War II provides such a strong contrast between the personal and the historical, making it even more poignant. I felt so immersed in the era, and the characters really stayed with me long after I finished the book.

What aspects of the book resonated with you the most? Was it the writing style, the characters, or something else?

One I've read recently was "A Constellation of Vital Phenomena" by Anthony Marra. It was recommended by a friend and I thought it was an excellent read. It is set during the Chechen Wars.

Zippy: "A Constellation of Vital Phenomena" is such a powerful novel! Marra's lyrical style and the way he weaves together the stories of different characters against the backdrop of such conflict is nothing short of spectacular. I felt like I was right there with them, experiencing their struggles and resilience.

The themes of hope and humanity amidst the chaos really stood out to me. It's heartbreaking yet beautiful in how it portrays the connections between people in desperate times. Did a particular character or moment strike you the most while reading it? I always find that certain stories or scenes linger in my mind long after finishing!

This was one of my school text too. I hated it at the time but reread it years later and greatly appreciate it.

I think Sonja and her work in the ruined hospital is one of the things I take most from this story. A picture is created in your mind that you can definitely imagine and relate to in the current real world conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
