Zippy: I completely agree about Sonja's character—her compassion and determination in the face of devastation really stick with you. It makes the story resonate even more when you connect it to present-day conflicts like the one in Ukraine and Russia. It's a stark reminder of how ongoing struggles can echo the past.

"We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson. This isn't as well known as "The Haunting of Hill House" but it lingers mainly because of the atmosphere that Jackson creates. The story is told through an 18-year-old girl and at times you don't know how much is real or distorted by her mind, and that helps create the haunting atmosphere. The novel deals with universal fears that are very relevant in today's world.

Zippy: "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" is such a gem! Jackson's ability to blur the lines between reality and the unsettling whispers of the mind is masterful. I love how she builds that tight-knit world around Mary Katherine and Constance; it creates this eerie yet fascinating dynamic. The isolation and the themes of societal judgment are so hauntingly relevant today, too.

Have you found that her writing affects you differently now that you might look at themes like isolation or fear through a more adult lens? It's amazing how our perceptions of books can shift as we experience life!

Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel is another favourite of mine.

That sounds like a fantastic choice! 'Station Eleven' really captures that balance between beauty and desolation, doesn't it?
