Tottenham Hotspur are in positive talks with the camp of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali over a potential summer move.

There has been no contact so far with Newcastle, but if an agreement looks possible with the player, club-to-club contact can be expected to follow. The transfer fee is considered a bigger challenge for Spurs than a deal with the player.

Tottenham are prepared to push hard for a statement signing, which is being driven by head coach Roberto De Zerbi and is backed by the ownership.

Tonali, 26, has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Manchester City but at this stage Spurs are most advanced over a proposed deal.

Manchester City are giving genuine consideration to signing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, as well as Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday that Tottenham have held productive talks with Tonali's camp and want to make the Italian their major signing this summer, but face serious competition from City, who have continued to track the player.

City's interest in Tonali, 26, does not affect their plans to sign Anderson and they remain in talks with Nottingham Forest about a potential British record transfer.

Signing both midfielders, for what would likely be a combined cost of over £200million ($268m), comes with City seeking to build a side for Enzo Maresca, Pep Guardiola's successor, that can challenge for next season's Premier League title.

Liverpool are set to sign Spain international winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna after triggering his €40m (£34.6m) release clause.

Newcastle United were admirers of the 22-year-old, but Liverpool have won the race for his signature, with sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group's CEO of football, Michael Edwards, driving the deal.

Munoz will sign a six-year contract at Anfield.

Anderson is set to sign a five-year contract at City which, if all bonuses are realised, will be worth in the region of £300,000 per week.

The deal will include an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

Sunderland's Granit Xhaka is reportedly on the verge of joining Chelsea. Xhaka wants to re-join Xabi Alonso and return to London.

There has no no club-to-club contact and Sunderland would not welcome any offers as the midfielder is not for sale.
