Newcastle United co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi are to leave the club after three years at St James' Park. Staveley, 51, played a key role in orchestrating the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund's (PIF) purchase of an 80 per cent stake in Newcastle for £300million (now $379m) in 2021, helping bring to an end Mike Ashley's 14-year ownership of the club. As part of that deal, she acquired a 10 per cent stake in Newcastle, having made three failed attempts to buy the club from Ashley in 2017. The Reuben family also bought a 10 per cent share. The Premier League faced criticism for approving the Saudi-backed takeover, including from Amnesty International who called it "an extremely bitter blow for human rights defenders". A Companies House update earlier this year showed that Staveley's stake has been diluted to six per cent, with the Reuben family's shares increasing. In March, questions were raised about Staveley's future at the club after filings on Companies House showed she had resigned as a director from 20 Newcastle-related companies. However, she quickly moved to assuage any doubts about her role at the club. "The changes made… were purely administrative, to non-trading subsidiaries," she wrote on Instagram. "After the takeover, Jamie (Reuben) and I stepped in as directors of all companies until we could build an executive team. We remain on the 'top-co' and the board." Staveley featured heavily in the We Are Newcastle United Amazon documentary last August and recently helped secure a deal between golf's PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabia-funded LIV tour. She is expected to continue to work with PIF and remain involved in football. She also previously helped broker the £210m sale of Manchester City in 2008 to Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour.
The correct decision. Yes, VAR can and should be definitely improved. But for me the fact that it prevents blatant referee mistakes alone is a major reason to keep VAR. The overall % of accurate decisions have gone from low 80% to low 90%. VAR gets more right then it gets wrong. Getting the right decisions is the most important factor.
Real Madrid are something else when it comes to the Champions League. They were second best for most of the final but they found a way to win like they have many times before. Dortmund were excellent in the first half but they paid the price for not taking their chances. I thought Camavinga was excellent. He never seems to get the headlines but always impressed when I see him play. He looks so mature for his age in his playing style. Interesting to see where Mbappe fits in. My guess is replacing Rodrygo as one of the split strikers if they keep that system.
He's the most influential manager since Cruyff, imo. There have been lots of incredible managers, but I haven't seen many of them have this level of influence on the game. He's genuinely incredible - and I say that as a non-City fan. An absolute legend first as a player and now as a manager, there is nothing I dislike about Guardiola and have huge respect for his teams and the football they play. I think @The GOAT is right, City will be going through a rebuild as players seek new challenges and others are moved on. I'm not sure Pep has the energy or desire to stick around for that, he will need to take a break from the high intensity, pressure and demands at some point and it would make sense to come at the end of his current contract.
Atalanta have had too much for Leverkusen tonight. There will be no unbeaten season for the Germans, they have been soundly beaten here. Three cracking goals from Ademola Lookman who played for Everton and Leicester earlier in his career. The first one was all about the movement to get in front of the defender and put the ball into the top corner. The second was a beautiful one from the edge of the box and the third was just smacked into the top corner. A superb individual display. Leverkusen not really threatening and have been really poor.
Nottingham Forest have failed with an appeal against their four-point punishment for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR). The three-person appeal board arrived at a "unanimous" decision to uphold the original ruling by the commission, describing it as "commendably clear and comprehensive". "Some of the criticisms of the [original] decision have involved a minute examination of the words used by the commission," the board said of Forest's appeal. "Decisions such as these should not be subjected to microscopic forensic examination and interpreted as if they were statutes which have been drafted by parliamentary counsel. "Allegations of infelicities of language or errors which are not material to the ultimate decision add to the complexity and costs of proceedings and are rarely likely to lead to a successful challenge of a decision."
Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce a spending cap. A majority of clubs voted in favour of the spending cap, which will be determined by the amount of money earned in television rights by the lowest-earning club in the Premier League. If approved in June's AGM, the new model will replace the current Profit and Sustainability Regulations from the 2025-26 season. Premier League spending cap: Clubs vote in favour of developing plans
Seems like we may still see sin bins.... Football's lawmakers are expected to scrap plans for blue cards as part of trials for a new sin-bin system. The blue cards were set to form part of a trial involving sin bins, with the aim being to give greater protection to referees. Although blue cards are unlikely to be implemented, sin bins are due to be given the green light when the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and FIFA meet on Saturday at Cameron House in Scotland for IFAB's Annual General Meeting (AGM). Discussions over the introduction of sin bins will centre on dissent towards the referee and anti-football actions.
Well done Liverpool. Four great stories emerged from this victory: Klopp, Van Dijk, the kids, and don't forget the keeper, Caoimhin Kelleher. He was the candidate right behind Van Dijk for man of the match. Many great saves, perfect distribution, flawless ball handling! How Moises Caicedo escaped even a yellow card for his terrible tackle on Ryan Gravenberchsurely must be looked.
