The post is clear and provides detailed information about the situation regarding Everton's points deduction, making it helpful for the community to understand the implications of the ruling.

I don't get why teams like Leeds are saying they will sue. If Everton's overspend was in 21/22 then Burnley has a case. If it was 22/23 then Leicester has a case. Everton could only possibly have replaced one of those teams in the relegation zone and only in one of those seasons so why are the other teams trying to stick their noses in the trough?

Everton have had their 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) reduced to six points.

The club were referred to an independent commission in March for alleged breaches relating to the 2021-22 season and initially deducted 10 points in November.

The reduction of their points penalty will move Everton on to 25 points and up to 15th in the Premier League.

The club called the decision — the biggest in the competition's history and first relating to financial fair play regulations — "wholly disproportionate and unjust" and appealed against it two weeks later.

That appeal has now been partially successful, with four of the 10 points restored.

A Premier League statement read: "An independent appeal board has concluded that the sanction for Everton FC's breach of the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules (PSRs), for the period ending season 2021/22, will be an immediate six-point deduction.

"This follows the club's appeal of an independent commission's decision in November 2023 to impose a 10-point deduction for the club's breach of the PSRs.

"The appeal was heard over three days earlier this month, by an appeal board comprising Sir Gary Hickinbottom (chair), Daniel Alexander KC and Katherine Apps KC.

"Everton FC appealed the sanction imposed against it on nine grounds, each of which related to the sanction rather than the fact of the breach, which the club admitted.

"Two of those nine grounds were upheld by the appeal board, which has substituted the original points deduction of 10 for six.

"This revised sanction has immediate effect and the Premier League table will be updated today to reflect this."

Everton have been deducted a further two points for a second breach of Premier League financial rules.

Profit and sustainability rules (PSR) permit clubs to lose £105m over three years and an independent commission found Everton breached that by £16.6m for the three-year period to 2022-23.

They drop one place to 16th and are now two points above the relegation zone.

Everton confirmed they will now appeal against their second penalty. The Premier League can also appeal against the independent commission's decision, to increase the sanction.

A club statement read: "In January 2024, Everton were charged by the Premier League for breaching the permitted profitability and sustainability thresholds for the assessment period ending 2022/23.

"The matter was referred to a Premier League commission, which has today announced Everton will receive an immediate two-point deduction. While the club's position has been that no further sanction was appropriate, the club is pleased to see that the commission has given credit to the majority of the issues raised by the club, including the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the club due to the war in Ukraine, and the high level of co-operation and early admission of the club's breach.

"Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the League on all matters relating to PSR but is extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to the Fan Advisory Board and other fan groups for their submissions during this process, and to all Evertonians for their ongoing patience and unstinting support.

"The club and its legal representatives have begun the preparations to appeal the commission's decision."

All seems very random how the points deductions are worked out. Surely a second breach should carry a bigger punishment?

Whether you agree with the punishment or not, point reductions with 7 games to go is ridiculous.
