Russian Invasion of Ukraine | A War in Europe After Hours

Thread Insights Discussion AI ▼
Russia's invasion hardens into a long war of attrition and broken diplomacy
7/10 Heated debate

The post presents timely information and includes quotes from credible sources, enhancing its overall relevance. However, it could benefit from more personal insights or analysis to increase its value to the community.

Russian invasion sanctions Kyiv NATO ceasefire talks US aid

The thread opens with alarm as the invasion begins, quickly shifting from cautious speculation to shock and anger as reports confirm attacks on major Ukrainian cities. Early posts focus on troop buildups, civilian danger, NATO limits, and the belief that Russia has launched a war that will carry severe military, economic, and political costs.12

As the war grinds on, the discussion becomes dominated by battlefield updates, sanctions, atrocities, and repeated fears of escalation, including nuclear and chemical threats. Members debate the meaning of territorial gains and losses, condemn Russian propaganda, and increasingly frame the conflict as a struggle not just over land but over the survival of Ukrainian sovereignty.34

Later posts shift toward exhaustion with Western hesitation and then toward frustration at U.S. policy, especially under Trump, whose shifting positions on aid, ceasefires, and negotiations are treated as dangerously pro-Russian. The thread ends with a broad consensus that Ukraine cannot be forced into surrender terms, while Europe must become more self-reliant and skeptical of Washington's reliability.56

"In my view this doesn’t (or, can’t) end without the absolute end of the Putin era in Russia."

"We don't want this war and have never wanted it, But if Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn too."

Verdict

No lasting resolution is reached, but the thread does crystallize a shared view that Russia's demands are unacceptable and that Ukraine's survival depends on sustained external support. The strongest agreement is on the need for Europe to harden its stance, while the biggest open wound remains whether the West can still shape the outcome.

Some signalling that Starlink has been cutoff for Ukraine. No confirmation from the US yet though.

More disgusting behaviour from the Americans.

Ukraine has not struck refineries since Trump announced the mutual ceasefire

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stressed that Ukraine has refrained from striking Russian oil refineries and energy facilities for two days in response to a proposal by US President Donald Trump. Russia, meanwhile, has attacked Ukrainian energy facilities and critical infrastructure.

Russia's response is, of course, as predicted.

Elon Musk has denied involvement in limiting the speed of Starlink connectivity on some services in Ukraine.

Musk said the systems are "owned and controlled by the US government".

"Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately the President of the United States," he said.

It looks like Zelensky has lost any faith in Trump and also patience. When will the rest of the world show the same courage to speak out like this?

It says a lot that a dodgy guy like Piers Morgan speaks the truth to Trump more than any of our European leaders

Europe should be taking large steps to disconnect from Trump and the US. Unfortunately, they aren't trustworthy under this administration.

Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is "only standing up for Ukraine's interests" after Donald Trump criticised Kyiv's renewed strikes on Russian oil refineries as a "disgrace".

Trump also said Zelensky was "more difficult to deal with than [Russian President Vladimir] Putin" and described him as "not a big fan of Zelensky" in an interview with US outlet Newsmax on Thursday evening.

Zelensky, speaking at an EU summit in Brussels, said he could not accept a controversial diesel deal between the US and Moscow, adding: "If I don't stand up to this... who else will?"

Arriving in Brussels after a visit to London, Zelensky said it was good to be back among allies and called them "Leaders, real leaders".

At the summit, funding for Ukraine and support to get through another winter were central issues. Zelensky told the European Council the war would cost €155bn (£131bn; $174bn) next year, with the EU needing at least €70bnfor defence and weapons.

He said Ukraine could produce up to three times more drones, but "simply [doesn't] have enough money for that".

Zelensky also said Europe had the interceptors Ukraine would need this winter, but described them as being gathered in a piecemeal fashion.

He said there are "many people with good hearts in America" who want "to be allies, not to divide or humiliate Europe".

Trump has criticised Ukraine for resuming strikes on Russian oil refineries earlier this week, saying the attacks could affect Moscow's ability to complete its part of the diesel deal, which will see 300,000 tonnes of diesel sent to "the American and global marketplace".

Kyiv said it would stop the strikes if Russia did the same, but Moscow said it had never agreed to the deal and continued its attacks. After three days, Ukraine resumed its strikes.

Trump said of Zelensky: "All he's doing is making the world oil price higher... There are a lot of targets that you can hit."

Zelensky said the diesel deal was a gift to Putin and would "put more money straight into Putin's pocket to fund this war".

He also said restrictions on the US-owned Starlink internet network were a "very dangerous and unpleasant surprise", after a slowdown on Tuesday night during which there were several deadly Russian strikes on Ukraine.

Zelensky said Starlink speeds were still not fully restored.

The Trump administration had previously warned that it could withhold intelligence-sharing if Kyiv does not stop hitting Russia's oil refineries.

Meanwhile, several people were killed in a Russian drone strike on Kharkiv on Thursday night, while Russian officials said the airspace above Moscow was closed for hours after Ukrainian strikes, with 644 drones intercepted over 26 Russian regions.
