It's so great to be watching live F1 again!

Mercedes 1-2. Everyone's just finding the rhythm still but it's obvious that the Mercs are ahead. Bottas 4 tenths behind Hamilton early on.

Sickened seeing Mercedes so far in front. As expected but still...
That's stark. The Mercedes car may as well be in a different formula to the rest. As usual.

Red Bull are protesting Mercedes' steering system. It's hard to see how any objective reading of the rules can possibly define the system as legal, but we will see.

The stewards' ruling cites an alleged breach of Articles 3.8 and 10.2.3 of the technical regulations, with the latter being the expected grounds of protest relating to the suspension of the car.

Article 10.2.3 states that "no adjustment may be made to any suspension system while the car is in motion".

Article 3.8 of the regulations relates to aerodynamic influence, stating that "any specific part of the car influencing its aerodynamic performance must comply with the rules relating to bodywork" and "must be rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car (rigidly secured means not having any degree of freedom)".

The regulation added: "With the exception of the driver adjustable bodywork described in Article 3.6.8 (in addition to minimal parts solely associated with its actuation) and the parts described in Articles 11.4, 11.5 and 11.6, any specific part of the car influencing its aerodynamic performance must remain immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car."

DAS has already been outlawed for the 2021 season under the planned technical regulations.

I've been busy all day so I haven't followed it, but I guess by that protest it means the Mercedes was running DAS?

Yes and very successfully too. There are rumours Red Bull have their own DAS system ready to go if it's deemed legal so win-win for them

Redbull protest rejected

Formula 1 officials have rejected a protest by Red Bull against a controversial steering system on Mercedes' 2020 car.

Red Bull alleged that the so-called dual-axis steering system (DAS) broke the rules on two counts.
They said that was because it was an aerodynamic and suspension-related device.

But stewards at the season-opening race decided that it was legal because it constituted a steering device alone.

They said it was "not conventional" but did not contravene the rules on steering.

Red Bull argued that the DAS was a moveable aerodynamic device and that it was an adjustment to the suspension while the car was in motion.

I was thinking this was ridiculous. Every man and his mother knew Mercedes was going to use this system from as far back as pre-season testing, yet Red Bull wait until now to kick up about it.

Chancers being chancers. If they had any genuine concerns they would have flagged it during pre-season testing.

I don't think they were able to lodge a complaint until it was an actual race weekend.
