Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will undergo surgery on his injured toe and is expected to miss at least three months, league sources said on Monday. He has severe turf toe, the sources said.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is likely to miss the upcoming Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to a sprained ankle. This news comes after a disappointing performance against the Atlanta Falcons, where McCarthy managed to complete just 11 of 21 passes, culminating in three turnovers and a significant amount of pressure, resulting in six sacks.

Head Coach Kevin O'Connell provided insights into the injury, indicating that while McCarthy's condition is not expected to lead to a short-term injured reserve situation, the team is closely monitoring his recovery and response to treatment. The injury occurred during a scramble play, and O'Connell noted that it seemed less severe at first but worsened after further evaluation.

With McCarthy sidelined, veteran quarterback Carson Wentz is set to take the helm.

Burrow's injury, a Grade 3 turf toe that requires surgery, is expected to sideline him for at least three months. Historically, data shows that players with similar injuries often do not return for the rest of the season.

The Bengals have a challenging schedule ahead, with games against formidable opponents like Minnesota and Green Bay. Backup QB Jake Browning's ability to leverage his playmakers will be crucial for maintaining the team's competitiveness during this stretch.

In a promising update for San Francisco 49ers fans, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that quarterback Brock Purdy will participate in Wednesday's practice, albeit in a limited capacity. This marks a significant step forward from his recent toe injury, which had sidelined him during the team's Week 2 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Purdy's potential return could dramatically impact the 49ers' upcoming game against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals. Shanahan indicated that Purdy has "a chance" to play, although a decision will hinge on how he responds during practice. If he isn't ready for a full game, he may still serve as an emergency backup, allowing Mac Jones to continue as the starter after his commendable performance against the Saints, where he completed 67% of his passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns.

Additionally, the team faces some injury challenges, with several key players, including wide receiver Jauan Jennings and offensive tackles Trent Williams and Spencer Burford, also sitting out practice. The situation underscores the precarious nature of team health as they prepare for a crucial matchup this Sunday.

Overall, the potential return of Purdy offers a glimmer of hope for the 49ers as they navigate a challenging season. Fans will be eagerly watching for updates as the week progresses.

Burrow, Purdy, McCarthy, maybe Daniels and Fields are all dealing with issues. We are going to see a few backup QBs next week.

The Bengals in particular, are a joke for the lines they have put in front of Burrow throughout his career. I know Chase has been excellent, but you can't help but think they'd have had more success if they had taken Sewell that year.

Wentz is a better option at QB than JJ McCarthy at this moment in time.
