His language really struck me, especially the part when he said when he is asked about why he didn't speak about it while be was playing, and he says well why would he do that when was earning lots of money, who is going to listen to him or offer empathy when he is.

His language really struck me, especially the part when he said when he is asked about why he didn't speak about it while be was playing, and he says well why would he do that when was earning lots of money, who is going to listen to him or offer empathy when he is.

That attitude is hugely prevalent among football fans. You see it countless times on message boards, fans saying things like "I'm sure the tens of thousands of pounds he earns every week will soften the blow" etc. We are in the age of social media when everything players do is under the microscope, where every little mistake is ridiculed not only by rival fans but by their own club fans, wishing death on players or issuing threats for making mistakes. The likes of Twitter is a megaphone for the moronic. Can you imagine making a mistake in your own job and having thousands of strangers messaging you saying they hope you die for it? For all the glory and adulation footballers can get some of the crap they have to contend with is disgusting.

The more you see behind the scenes for a lot of players it's a lonely life being a pro footballer. Money doesn't equal happiness.

Of course money doesn't equal happiness. And obviously, footballers are no more immune from depression or mental health issues than people in IT, binmen etc.

On the other hand, they don't have the stresses that many people face, wondering how to pay the mortgage or the kids college fees, stressed because the car needs a gearbox and they don't have the few hundred needed etc.

Spurs looked like a club that was building things up, improving year on year, very solid base, some fine players that were settled there.

And now it all seems a little rudderless, TV programmes, big money touted for back up strikers, questions about whether the manager still has it. It's not Leeds or Sunderland meltdown stuff, it just seems like...floundering.
