Ballsy move by Ukraine to "invade" Kursk last week.

Yesterday, Ukraine said its forces had taken control of 74 settlements in Russia's southern Kursk region.

Briefing Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's chief of staff Oleksandr Syrskyi said Kyiv's military had seized 40 square kilometres of new territory over the past 24 hours.

It came as the Russian defence ministry said its forces blocked an effort by Kyiv's troops to expand the week-long attack.

Here are the other key developments over the last 24 hours:
  • Lithuania's defence minister Laurynas Kasciunas said Russia is moving troops from its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad to the southern Kursk region;
  • Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's deputy envoy to the UN, said Vladimir Putin's "generous" offer is "no longer on the table" after Ukraine invaded Russia's Kursk border region;
  • Ukraine's invasion into the Kursk region has revealed a shortage of Russian troops which could result in a new mobilisation by the end of this year, Bloomberg reported;
  • Russia summoned a senior Moldovan diplomat to express "serious concern" over reports of Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine being based in Moldova, the Russian foreign ministry said;
  • Belarus sent troops to Russia in order to take part in training exercises.

Russia have a dilemma on their hands. Their usual method of levelling any settlement they want to take isn't going to go down well when it's their own territory. Won't stop them for doing it though.

Another great report from Steve Rosenberg

Rosenberg is excellent, considering he's Russia-based he takes it to the line but not too far. You get the underlying message of his thoughts without him being provocative.

I'm amazed how Putin gets a free pass from the Russian people, he's taken them into an unnecessary war with hundreds of thousands of Russian men dead and injured, depleted Russian military stock from Soviet times and is in the process of ruining the economy to attempt to force Ukrainians to be Russians.

It looks more and more likely that Ukraine will lose a hefty chunk of land, at the very least. They should have been allowed to join NATO before Russia took Crimea. They were hung out to dry by the NATO states.

Now, the same countries are opposed to letting them have the weapons and capabilities to defend themselves with long range weapons because they don't want to risk upsetting Putin.

If the signatories of the Budapest Memorandum kept their end of the bargain none of this would have happened.

It doesn't matter who wins the US Presidency anywhere near as much as some people think, from what I've read.

Funding has already been made available which should last Ukraine the best part of two years and up until the half-term elections take place.

Every chance that even if the Democrats lost this election they would take control of the house in two years.

I'm no expert in US politics but it looks to me that Trump's hands are pretty much tied as far as his threats of cutting all aid to Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden has given the green light for Ukraine to use long-range missiles supplied by the US to strike Russia, according to US media reports.

There is no formal confirmation by the White House or the Pentagon of the move which would be a major change of US policy.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has been urging for months for these restrictions on long-range missiles to be lifted, allowing Ukraine to target locations inside Russia.

This should have been authorised months ago.
