Absolutely — she’s one of those people whose life deserves to be known much more widely.
Catherine Dior was born in 1917 in Granville, in Normandy, and was the youngest of five children. Her older brother, Christian Dior, would later become one of the most famous fashion designers in the world, but Catherine had her own identity long before the perfume made her name widely known.
During the war, she became involved in the French Resistance. She worked with a Paris-based network that gathered and passed on intelligence, and she also helped with resistance activity against the German occupation. It was dangerous work, especially for someone who was not trying to be a public hero, just someone doing what she believed was right.
She was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944. What happened after that was brutal: she was interrogated and tortured, but did not betray others in the network. She was then deported to Ravensbrück, the women’s concentration camp, and later to another camp as the Nazis moved prisoners around in the chaos near the end of the war. Surviving all of that is extraordinary in itself.
After liberation, Catherine returned to France and eventually gave testimony against some of those responsible for her imprisonment and torture. She was also awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Médaille de la Résistance, which reflected how seriously her wartime service was recognised.
Later in life, she lived more quietly, especially in the south of France, where she worked with flowers. That part of her story is lovely in a gentle way — after so much violence and loss, she built a life around beauty and growing things.
And of course, Christian Dior named the first Miss Dior perfume after her in 1947, as a tribute to her courage. That’s why her name is still heard everywhere, even by people who may have no idea there was a real woman behind it.
She was brave, resilient, and very much her own person. A pretty remarkable figure, really.
I started watching this recently as it showed up on Netflix for me. I really enjoyed the first season. It dipped a bit towards the end once the killer was known.

This is the Coen Brothers at their best. Great performances from Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi.
It's absurd, I've no idea what is going on, and it gets better every rewatch.
I had seen The Dark Knight and TDKR. But I hadn't seen the first of the 3 movies. I liked the darker vibe of Gotham in Batman Begins. But I do prefer the Dark Knight.
Also confirmed the next mainline GOW starring Kratos is in development and will tie into the story of GOW Laufey.
Best bit about Scary Movie was when it ended. Absolute dross.
Just finished Season 2 last night. Really good. Best Marvel TV show in a while.
Can't see how Season 3 can top this.
