You have NBA seasons when over a third of the teams are actively looking to lose. Regular-season NBA basketball is possibly the most pointless major sport in the world. Is it any wonder that the environment becomes a haven for all sorts of corruption? For anyone who doesn't know, do a bit of research on how Wilt Chamberlain got his famous 100 point game, or when Kobe scored 60 in his retirement game with no-one defending him. There are too many games that don't matter in the NBA, other than stat padding and gambling, from the looks of it.
I haven't watched this yet, but it was only recorded a few days before his death and going off what Barker has said, he seemed to be in really good spirits. Just shows that you never know what goes on behind closed doors, and if anyone is feeling low to the point of being suicidal, then please speak to someone.
In the latest NFL quarterback stock report, one name stands out above the rest — Baker Mayfield. Once viewed as a polarising figure in the league, Mayfield has rewritten his story with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, emerging as a legitimate MVP contender and a commanding presence under centre. Now 30, Mayfield is enjoying a career renaissance defined by poise, precision, and resilience. After weathering turbulent chapters with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers, he’s silenced critics through sheer consistency and leadership. The numbers tell the story: a 66.2% completion rate, 12 touchdowns, and just one interception — a staggering improvement over the 16 he threw last season. Key Highlights from Mayfield’s Standout Season Franchise-Calibre Leadership: League executives are calling his current form “franchise-calibre,” praising his ability to read defenses, extend plays, and make quick, decisive throws. Clutch Performer: With four game-winning drives to his name, Mayfield leads the league in late-game heroics — a testament to his cool head under pressure. Thriving Through Adversity: Despite missing key offensive weapons, he’s maintained composure and command, proving his deep understanding of the system and his growing influence in the locker room. The Broader Quarterback Landscape If Mayfield continues at this pace, he could join a rare group - becoming only the third MVP in NFL history to have played for at least four different teams, alongside Earl Morrall and Rich Gannon. That potential milestone underscores both his talent and his remarkable journey through setbacks and reinvention. Looking Ahead As the season progresses, for Baker Mayfield, the mission is clear: sustain this elite level of play and cement his status among the NFL’s upper echelon. His resurgence is not just a story of talent - it’s one of perseverance, leadership, and the power of second chances.
Dembélé was the obvious winner. Yamal’s case was always a bit unusual, as he didn’t win the La Liga Player of the Year, Champions League Player of the Year, or Nations League Player of the Tournament awards. He wasn’t the best player in ANY major competition he played in this year. Bonmati is a great player and had a very good season. But Mariona Caldentey should’ve won this year IMO. PFA Player of the year in the WSL, won the Champions League, runner-up at the Euro and scored in the final.
I genuinely don't understand how any team in the Premier League that's qualified for Europe for the first time is expected to maintain it year-on-year. Spend and push in the Premier League only to meet stricter financial regulations; sell your players, and you'll be lucky to qualify again. Unless, of course, you have revenue up there with the "Big 6", but that takes years to grow.
Chelsea's statement. "Chelsea FC is pleased to confirm that its engagement with The FA concerning matters that were self-reported by the club is now reaching a conclusion. The Club’s ownership group completed its purchase of the club on 30 May 2022. During a thorough due diligence process prior to completion of the purchase, the ownership group became aware of potentially incomplete financial reporting concerning historical transactions and other potential breaches of FA rules. Immediately upon the completion of the purchase, the Club self-reported these matters to all relevant regulators, including The FA. The Club has demonstrated unprecedented transparency during this process, including by giving comprehensive access to the Club’s files and historical data. We will continue working collaboratively with The FA to conclude this matter as swiftly as possible. We wish to place on record our gratitude to The FA for their engagement with the Club on this complex case, the focus of which has been on matters that took place over a decade ago."
In a significant development, Manchester City and the Premier League have reached a settlement regarding the legal dispute over the associated party transaction (APT) rules. This settlement marks the conclusion of proceedings that began with City’s legal challenge in January, where they argued that amendments to the APT rules were “unlawful and void.” Both parties have now agreed on the validity of the current APT rules, which were introduced to ensure financial stability and competitive balance within the league by regulating commercial revenues from linked entities. The APT rules, amended twice in 2024, aim to prevent clubs from gaining unfair advantages through enhanced revenues connected to their ownership. City's contention was that the amended rules were discriminatory, particularly regarding scrutiny of shareholder loans compared to other commercial deals. They believed these loans should also undergo fair market value assessments retrospectively. The settlement comes amidst ongoing discussions about City’s sponsorship agreements, notably with Etihad Airways, and follows a series of legal confrontations between the club and the Premier League. Notably, an independent panel had previously deemed some of the APT regulations unlawful, prompting a reevaluation by the league. As of now, both Manchester City and the Premier League have opted not to provide further comments on this matter. The legal proceedings have been complex, with a judgment regarding 115 charges against City still pending, to which the club has denied any wrongdoing. In summary, here are the key points from the settlement: Key Points: Manchester City and Premier League settle dispute over APT rules. City accepts APT rules as valid, following a legal challenge. Amendments to rules aimed at financial stability and competitive balance. City argued rules were discriminatory regarding shareholder loans. No further comments from either party post-settlement. Judgment on ongoing charges against City is still awaited.

Manchester United is reportedly in discussions with Turkish club Trabzonspor regarding a potential season-long loan for goalkeeper Andre Onana. This arrangement, should it materialise, is expected to be without a fee and without an option to buy, pending Onana's agreement. Onana has yet to feature in the Premier League this season and is open to the opportunity, particularly as he awaits a review of his contract situation. Trabzonspor aims to have him available in time for their upcoming match against Fenerbahce on September 14, as the Turkish transfer window remains open until September 12.

For me, it's that top-tier player that would walk into any team in the era that they play in. The term is wildly overused to describe players that are "just" very good or are going through a prolonged purple patch, but in reality, it's not just the player's ability that makes them world-class; they also need the mentality, consistency and professionalism to go with it.
